Drone Registration In India
According to the recent announcement by the Central Government of India on 25th August 2021, the drone rules have been amended and previous regulations of the Drone operating system have been abolished. The new rules are based on trust, self-certification, and non-intrusive monitoring for the use of Drones or Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) in India.
The new drone rules are much clearer and user-friendly. One doesn’t have to go through the rigid certificate of conformation and maintenance, operator permits, import clearance, and authorization of R&D. moreover, the license and registration fees have been reduced to encourage the users to get registration and UIN number based on their drone size.
The department of the Civil Aviation Ministry has also issued the name of the certified flight institutes to get your online training and learn the rules of fly zones with easy access. After the launch of the Digital Sky Platform to regulate and control all Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), the registration, license and permits have become quite easy. One can self-register and self permit their drone flight by simply stating the purpose.
However, the Government of India has opted for a “ No Permission, No Take off” system which allows them to control unauthorized flights. If you don’t have permission your drone will not be able to take off, it only maintains privacy and security issues in a certain area. In India, foreigners are not allowed to use drones they can give it on lease or hire any trained pilot by registering on the platform and issuing the UIN number.
Types Of Drones In India
UAS or drone classification has been done based on maximum all-up weight. A drone's weight must be under 500 Kg or equal, if any drone is above the maximum weight limit then the drone rules will not be applied and it will fall under the provisions of the aircraft rule, 1937.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation has broadly classified the drones into 5 categories:
1. Nano drones - these drones have a weight less than or equal to 250 grams. Mostly used for research purposes. Do not require any registration or type certification.
2. Micro Drone - Weigh more than 250 grams and less than or equal to 2 Kg fall under this category. Registration and certification are mandatory but don’t require a flying permit.
3. Small drones- Weigh above 2kg and less than or equal to 25 kg are considered commercial UAS and required all kinds of registration, license, permit, and drone certification.
4. Medium drones - weigh more than 25 kg and less than or equal to 150Kg
5. Large drones- Weighs more than 150Kg or equal to 500kg
Drone Certification And Registration Process In India
Nano and micro drones don’t require certification or registration from the Government of India. You can get the OEMs certificate from the manufacturer or the Digital Sky platform with an NPL letter. However, one doesn’t require a certificate for manufacturing or importing a UAS in India.
Here is the registration process of drones or UAS in India:
Step 1- after buying the drone, check for your OEM certificate from the manufacturer and NPL letter
Step 2- Register your drone with the Digital Sky Platform, home page will show you different options, Click the one that suits you.
Step 3- Enter your details like name, address, and Certification number
Step 4- Get your UIN number from the platform and engrave it on your UAS
Step 5- Afterwards, apply for your UAOP( UAS operating Permit) from the Digital sky platform or https://bharatkosh.gov.in/
If you are a foreigner, you will need clearance from MHA and also need to hire remote pilot license personnel.
Step 6- Then apply for a remote pilot training program via DGCA approved institutions for 7 days and learn about communication, fly zone, and air traffic rules.
Step 7- Install the NPNT software program to compile with new aviation policy
